A season to remember forever

Girona finished the league in third place with 81 points in a historic season that became the best in the 93 years of the Club's existence.

Girona FC has made HISTORY in capital letters. Today's victory over Granada closes a dream season in which they have qualified for the Champions League after being among the best teams all year. In addition, team and fans have also celebrated together reaching 81 points, the highest figure achieved in LaLiga by a team other than Real Madrid, Barça and Atlético de Madrid. Apart from what they have done, it is also the way it has been achieved, along with the great victories they have given us, which means that Míchel Sánchez's men have raised the ‘orgull gironí’ to the highest level, writing one of the most special chapters in the 93 years of this club's life. In total there have been 25 wins, 6 draws and 7 defeats in just the fourth season in the First Division.

Three days to remember: Europe, Champions League and scoring record

After an extraordinary season, Montilivi has reaped the rewards by enjoying with their idols all the historic milestones that have been achieved. The first was on 20 April, when the victory against Cádiz allowed the club to mathematically qualify for Europe for the first time. Shortly afterwards, on 4 May, the joy was multiplied. An epic win against Barça by 4-2, with a comeback included, allowed the dream of being in the next edition of the Champions League to be fulfilled. Today, 24 May, in the last game of the season against Granada, we can also say that we have achieved a record score in LaLiga and celebrate with the fans something difficult to match. On average, the team has been going at a crazy pace, with 2.1 points per game.

Five times sole leaders of the Primera División

It all started on 12 August 2023 in San Sebastian, drawing the first league match against Real Sociedad (1-1). From then on, the Girona side went on a spectacular run that led to a record-breaking first half of the season. So much so that this season they have led the First Division on five different matchdays. The first was after a 1-2 win over Villarreal on matchday seven. From matchday 12 until the end of the first half of the season, they remained at the top of the table for two consecutive months, despite sometimes co-leading alongside Real Madrid. In between, prestigious victories against Barça (2-4) or Atleti (4-3).

Goals make the difference

Girona finished the season as the second highest scoring team in the category. Offensive production has been the great differentiating factor of a team that has scored 85 goals and conceded 46, despite the fact that Gazzaniga has also kept twelve clean sheets. One name stands out above the rest: Artem Dovbyk. The Ukrainian giant has been the team's top scorer, and has also become the Club's top scorer in a full season in the First Division (24). Even so, the Girona side have not been dependent on just one player, with fourteen of them finding the net this season. In the league, Sávio and Stuani (9), Tsygankov (8), Portu (7), Yangel Herrera and Iván Martín, Eric García (5), Aleix García and David López (3), Miguel and Valery (2), and Couto and Blind (1).

Montilivi, the twelfth player

The team has felt strong at the Montilivi stadium, and in large part this has been thanks to the fans, who have come out in force and pushed the team through the good and bad moments of the season to continue moving forward. Of the nineteen games played, fifteen have ended in victory, two in draws, and only two in defeats. In the stands, the figures are also very commendable: there have been 13 sold outs, and the attendance has averaged 88% spectators.

Seven years of exponential growth

Girona achieved promotion to the Primera División for the first time in 2017 after several failed attempts, and since then it has been seven intense seasons full of mixed emotions. Unfortunately, in 2019 the team lost the category, but in 2022, and after two seasons of unsuccessful attempts, they returned to celebrate promotion at the highest level. Last year they were already on the verge of reaching the Conference League, and this season they have achieved a milestone of a different dimension. In the best moments and in the worst, the ‘orgull gironí’ has always guided the entity forward to reach such high levels as the one we are celebrating today.
